“Blowin’ up” is the term used to describe a prostitute leaving her pimp. And it’s precisely what an experimental court in Queens, New York City advocates they do, dismissing defendants’ charges if they attend a series of mandatory counseling sessions. With intimate camerawork that lingers on details and brings the courtroom to life, this captivating documentary observes the counselors and judge working within a broken criminal justice system to change the way that women arrested for sex work are prosecuted.
